Lebanese Prime Minister Calls for International Action Against Israeli Aggression
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has strongly criticized the international community for its perceived inaction regarding Israel's ongoing military operations in Lebanon. In a statement released on November 4, 2024, Mikati emphasized that the silence of global powers has emboldened Israel to continue its aggressive actions, which he describes as crimes against Lebanon. He urged the international community to exert pressure on Israel to cease its military activities, which have resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction.
Mikati highlighted the urgent need for a ceasefire, stating that Israel has consistently rejected proposed solutions aimed at halting hostilities. He reiterated Lebanon's commitment to UN Resolution 1701, which calls for the cessation of hostilities, and expressed the government's determination to strengthen its military presence in southern Lebanon. The Prime Minister condemned the ongoing violence, which has led to the displacement of entire villages and threatens the country's cultural heritage, notably in historic cities like Baalbek and Tyre.
Cultural Heritage at Risk Amid Ongoing Conflict
In his remarks, Mikati pointed out that the Israeli attacks have not only caused humanitarian crises but also jeopardized Lebanon's rich cultural heritage. He noted that significant archaeological sites in Baalbek and Tyre are at risk due to the ongoing conflict. The Prime Minister has formally addressed the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, urging them to take immediate action to protect these historical landmarks, which are vital to Lebanon's national identity and global heritage.
Mikati's call to action includes a plea for the Security Council to implement measures that will safeguard civilians and prevent further attacks on medical and emergency response teams. He argued that the international community, particularly nations that advocate for human rights, must take a stand against the violence and work towards a resolution that respects Lebanon's sovereignty and cultural significance.
