Mikati Urges International Pressure on Israel to Cease Attacks on Lebanon
In a recent statement, Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati called for urgent international pressure on Israel to halt its aggressive actions in Lebanon. This appeal comes in the wake of violent raids that have devastated Beirut's southern suburbs, leading to significant civilian casualties and widespread displacement. Mikati emphasized the need for Israel to adhere to UN Resolution 1701, which calls for a cessation of hostilities, and thanked French President Emmanuel Macron for his support in advocating for a ceasefire alongside the United States and the European Union.
The ongoing conflict has escalated dramatically since September 23, with Israel intensifying its military operations in both Gaza and Lebanon. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reports that these hostilities have resulted in over 2,000 deaths and nearly 10,000 injuries, disproportionately affecting women and children. Furthermore, the violence has forced more than 1.2 million individuals to flee their homes, many seeking refuge in schools, which has prompted the Lebanese Minister of Education, Abbas Al-Halabi, to postpone the school year until November 4, 2024. Al-Halabi cited severe security risks and psychological barriers that hinder families from safely sending their children to school amid the ongoing turmoil.
