Diplomatic Efforts Intensify for a Ceasefire in Lebanon
Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has announced a significant escalation in diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Lebanon. This initiative comes ahead of an upcoming UN Security Council session, where the focus will be on halting the ongoing Israeli aggression that has led to numerous casualties among civilians and relief workers. Mikati highlighted the importance of international collaboration, particularly between the United States and France, to push for a temporary ceasefire that could pave the way for political discussions regarding the crisis.
Commitment to Security Council Resolution 1701
Mikati reiterated Lebanon's commitment to implement Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a complete cessation of hostilities and the establishment of a demilitarized zone between Lebanon and Israel. He criticized the inconsistent enforcement of this resolution, emphasizing that while Lebanon is prepared to comply, it requires Israel to adhere to its obligations as well. The Prime Minister warned that the lack of a resolution could escalate violence, potentially involving the entire region in conflict.
Humanitarian Crisis and International Support
The Prime Minister expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis resulting from the violent Israeli raids that began on September 23, which have caused hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries. He underscored the urgent need for international support to assist the displaced populations in Lebanon, as the government implements an emergency plan to address their needs. Mikati called for immediate action to stabilize the situation and prevent further escalation of violence, highlighting the critical role of international organizations in providing relief to those affected.
