Galant Reveals Netanyahu's Rejection of Gaza Prisoner Exchange Deal
In a recent revelation, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant, who was dismissed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, discussed the possibility of a prisoner exchange deal and a halt to military operations in Gaza. Speaking to families of hostages held by Hamas, Galant emphasized that there was no valid reason to avoid a prisoner swap, asserting that the reasons for Netanyahu's refusal were neither political nor military in nature.
Galant criticized the proposals put forth by Netanyahu, which included the exile of Hamas leaders and financial incentives for the release of hostages, labeling them as unrealistic. He noted that even the late Hamas political leader, Yahya Sinwar, had rejected similar offers. Galant argued that a temporary withdrawal from the Philadelphia Corridor for 42 days could have facilitated a prisoner exchange, which he deemed necessary given the lack of security or political significance in maintaining a presence there.
Additionally, Galant expressed concerns about the motives behind the continued military presence in Gaza, suggesting it stemmed from a desire for settlement rather than strategic necessity. He urged hostage families to strengthen their ties with Netanyahu, as he holds the ultimate decision-making power regarding the negotiations, and warned that failing to secure the return of hostages would be a disgrace for Israel.
Galant's dismissal came amid a crisis of trust between him and Netanyahu regarding military operations, particularly after the events of October 7, 2023, which he believes warrant a formal investigation. He highlighted three key disagreements with Netanyahu, including mandatory military service for all eligible individuals, the urgency of returning Israeli hostages from Gaza, and the need for an official inquiry into the recent military failures.
