US Military Strikes Target ISIS Camps in Syria
On October 11, 2024, the US military conducted a series of airstrikes against multiple Islamic State (ISIS) camps in Syria. According to a statement from the US Central Command (CENTCOM), these strikes were aimed at disrupting the group’s ability to plan and execute attacks against the US and its allies. The airstrikes were part of ongoing efforts to weaken the capabilities of ISIS, which, despite losing significant territorial control in 2017 and 2019, continues to pose a threat through sporadic attacks.
The CENTCOM statement emphasized that assessments of the strikes were still underway, but initial reports indicated no civilian deaths or injuries. This operation follows a series of successful strikes in recent months, including the killing of senior ISIS leaders. Notably, in June 2023, US forces eliminated a key ISIS official, and previous operations have resulted in the deaths of notorious leaders such as Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Abu Ibrahim al-Qurashi.
Currently, approximately 900 US soldiers are stationed in Syria as part of an international coalition formed in 2014 to combat ISIS. The coalition continues to conduct operations aimed at dismantling the remnants of the organization, which has been responsible for numerous attacks in the region and beyond. While ISIS was formally defeated in its strongholds, its hidden elements remain active, executing limited assaults primarily against security forces in both Iraq and Syria.
