Syrian Democratic Forces Build Watchtowers to Enhance Security in Deir Ezzor
In a strategic move to bolster security in Northern Syria, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have initiated the construction of a series of watchtowers along the Euphrates River. This project spans from the Jadid Akidat area to Al-Baghouz, near the Iraqi border, aiming to fortify control against ongoing threats from Syrian regime forces and affiliated militias. The construction of these towers comes amid escalating tensions and repeated attacks in the region, marking a critical step in the SDF's efforts to confront security disturbances.
A source within the SDF disclosed that the area has experienced continuous confrontations over the past year, particularly in cities such as Al-Mayadeen and Al-Qouriya, where regime forces have targeted SDF-controlled towns. The construction of the watchtowers, which are deemed an urgent military necessity, will enhance surveillance capabilities against infiltration and drug smuggling activities prevalent in the region.
Project Overview and Local Impact
The project, which has received approval from the US-led international coalition, entails the construction of 150 watchtowers, each standing 9 meters tall. Each tower will include facilities such as restrooms, a basement, and a surrounding courtyard, with a total area of approximately 1,000 square meters. The SDF is responsible for the construction and ongoing security of these towers, with an estimated cost of $70,000 per tower.
Despite the strategic advantages these towers aim to provide, local farmers have voiced their concerns regarding the impact on their livelihoods. Many have reported that their agricultural lands have been confiscated without compensation, leading to restrictions on their ability to irrigate crops. This has sparked tensions between the SDF and the local population, complicating the security dynamics in the region. Farmers fear that any dissent may lead to accusations of collaboration with rival forces, further straining their relationship with the SDF.
