Al-Sharaa and Fidan Discuss Strengthening Syrian Government and Relations
In a significant meeting held in Damascus, Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Commander-in-Chief of the New Syrian Administration, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized the need to strengthen the next government in Syria and enhance strategic relations between Syria and Turkey. Both leaders acknowledged the dire situation in Syria, with al-Sharaa highlighting that half of the Syrian population remains outside the country and the economic infrastructure is severely damaged.
Al-Sharaa stated, "Türkiye is a friend of the Syrian people and has stood with us since the beginning of the revolution," reinforcing the importance of international consensus for Syria's stability and the lifting of sanctions. He argued that sanctions should be lifted once their causes are resolved, particularly with the departure of the ousted regime. He also noted that the previous regime had instilled fear among minorities and perpetuated strife, emphasizing the new administration's commitment to protect all sects and minorities.
Fidan echoed these sentiments, expressing his support for the Syrian people and the need for a unified approach to rebuild the nation. He stated, "We will stand with the Syrians and will not abandon them," and stressed the importance of establishing a system that protects minorities and drafting a new constitution that respects all sects in Syria.
Both officials agreed on the necessity of a unified leadership among Syrian factions and the establishment of a Ministry of Defense to ensure state control over weapons, stating that loose arms pose a threat to stability. Fidan also called for the Arab world to engage with the new leadership in Syria, urging that it is not the time to wait for change.
The discussions also touched upon the need for international support to help Syria recover and rebuild its infrastructure. Fidan emphasized that the new administration in Syria must be given the opportunity to achieve its goals, and he called for an end to military operations by Israel in Syria, insisting on respect for the country's territorial integrity.
As both leaders concluded their meeting, they expressed hope for a brighter future for Syria, with a commitment to combat terrorist organizations and ensure the return of refugees and displaced persons.
