New Leadership in Syria Promises Safety and Stability
In a significant shift following the collapse of the Assad regime, the new leadership in Syria has addressed the nation, emphasizing a commitment to safety and the restoration of services. Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the political leader of the new government, assured citizens that safety would be extended to all except those guilty of murder and torture. He stated, "We are working to build a new Syria with the help of all its sons," highlighting the importance of rebuilding Damascus and welcoming back displaced individuals.
The statements come just days after armed opposition forces entered Damascus, leading to the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad, who has since sought asylum in Moscow. Al-Sharaa, previously known as Abu Mohammed al-Julani, expressed confidence in the victory achieved by the opposition, asserting that their efforts were locally sourced and not reliant on foreign support.
Focus on Security and Basic Services
Mohammed al-Bashir, head of the Syrian interim government, echoed these sentiments in an interview, stating that most government employees have returned to their posts and that the door is open for all except those involved in violence against the populace. He pledged to prioritize security and stability across cities, with plans to announce the full formation of the interim government soon.
Al-Bashir acknowledged the challenges ahead, including a legacy of corruption from the previous regime and a dire financial situation, with the Syrian pound losing significant value. However, he remains optimistic about restoring basic services and ensuring the rights of all sects in Syria. The military has also lifted the curfew in Damascus and surrounding areas, signaling a move towards normalcy as life gradually returns to the region.
