Al-Sharaa Vows Justice for Torture Victims in Syria
In a significant statement, Ahmad al-Sharaa, the Commander-in-Chief of the New Syrian Administration, declared that there will be no amnesty for individuals involved in the torturing and killing of detainees in Syrian prisons. Speaking through the official Syrian television's Telegram channel, al-Sharaa emphasized the commitment to pursue those responsible for these crimes, stating, "We will not pardon those who were involved in torturing and liquidating detainees and were the cause of that." He further called on countries harboring these criminals to extradite them to face justice in Syria.
This announcement follows the recent toppling of President Bashar al-Assad's regime, which has led to the liberation of several political prisoners and the discovery of bodies bearing signs of torture in hospitals across the region. Activists have reported shocking images of numerous bodies found in Harasta Hospital, believed to belong to prisoners executed by the regime prior to Assad's flight to Moscow last Sunday. Among the identified victims was Mazen Hamada, a prominent Syrian opposition activist who had previously endured multiple arrests and torture before seeking asylum in Europe.
