Spanish Police Arrest Five for $325,000 Brad Pitt Impersonation Scam
In a shocking case of identity theft, Spanish authorities have arrested five individuals linked to a fraudulent scheme that defrauded two women of a staggering €325,000 (approximately $362,000) by impersonating Hollywood actor Brad Pitt. The operation, dubbed "Bralina," involved the scammers convincing the victims that they were in a romantic relationship with the actor through social media and instant messaging platforms.
The Manipulation of Vulnerable Victims
According to the Spanish Civil Guard, the fraudsters meticulously analyzed the victims' social media profiles, identifying them as vulnerable individuals suffering from emotional deprivation and depression. The two women, one from Andalusia and the other from the Basque Country, were lured into believing they were communicating directly with Pitt, who promised them a future together. As a result, they made numerous bank transfers under the illusion of investing in fictitious projects proposed by the impersonators.
Recovery Efforts and Ongoing Investigations
Following the arrests, authorities managed to recover €85,000 (over $95,000) of the total amount stolen. The investigation, which began in August 2023, has also led to the identification of ten other individuals involved in the scam. Law enforcement seized multiple mobile phones, bank cards, and computers, along with a diary containing manipulative phrases used to deceive the victims. The arrested individuals now face serious charges, including fraud, money laundering, and membership in a criminal organization.
