Significant Snowfall Expected Across Northern France
Météo France has issued an orange alert for snow and ice across a large portion of northern France, including the Île-de-France region, as the country braces for an early winter episode. The alert, effective from 6 a.m. on Thursday, November 21, 2024, warns of challenging driving conditions due to expected snowfall. The storm, named Caetano, is predicted to bring varying accumulations, with Paris anticipating 1 to 3 cm of snow, while regions further east, particularly near Belfort, could see up to 20 cm.
The snow is expected to begin in northern Brittany early in the morning and will gradually move eastward, reaching Île-de-France around 10 a.m. By midday, the region is likely to be blanketed in snow, with continued snowfall anticipated throughout the afternoon. The snow is expected to exit the western and central parts of the country between 4 and 7 p.m., but may linger in the east until late evening.
Level 2 Snow and Ice Plan Activated in Île-de-France
In response to the impending snowfall, the Paris police prefecture has activated a level 2 snow and ice plan starting at 11 a.m. on Thursday. This plan includes a reduction of speed limits by 20 km/h across all roads in the Île-de-France region, which encompasses departments such as Yvelines, Val-d'Oise, and Seine-et-Marne. Additionally, vehicles over 7.5 tonnes are prohibited from overtaking on main roads.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution and consider using public transport. Authorities recommend carrying essential supplies, including warm clothing and food, in case of delays on the road. The situation is further complicated by strong winds affecting southern regions, with gusts potentially exceeding 100 km/h, particularly along the Atlantic coast. Residents are urged to stay informed and limit travel in affected areas.
