Severe Weather Warning Issued for Russia
Residents in Russia, particularly in Moscow, are bracing for a significant deterioration in weather conditions starting today, November 1, 2024. Meteorologists predict a sudden cold snap with temperatures plunging to around 0 °C, alongside a mix of rain and snow. The city will experience strong winds with gusts reaching up to 21 m/s, potentially making it one of the rainiest days recorded in the region's meteorological history.
Record Rainfall Expected
According to the official announcement from the Moscow mayor's office, the capital may see precipitation levels of up to 14 mm during the day, with some areas possibly receiving as much as 20 mm. Leading meteorologist Evgeny Tishkovets from the Phobos weather center suggested that November 1 could surpass the previous record set in 1981, which recorded 17.3 mm of rain. The anticipated rain is attributed to a warm atmospheric front associated with the North Atlantic cyclone named Martina. This front is expected to continue influencing the weather until early Saturday morning, with total rainfall possibly reaching 28 mm, accounting for 54% of the average November precipitation.
Safety Precautions Advised
With the impending weather changes, authorities are urging residents to exercise caution. They recommend avoiding sheltering under trees and advise car owners who have not switched to winter tires to refrain from using private vehicles. The situation is expected to worsen, with temperatures dropping below freezing this evening leading to ice formation on roads.
Meteorologists predict that the weather will remain unsettled throughout the weekend, with a transition to colder conditions, including the possibility of wet snow and black ice. Tatyana Pozdnyakova from the Meteonovosti news agency emphasized that the cold front will bring persistent precipitation, keeping temperatures low, especially at night. As the weekend progresses, conditions are likely to remain challenging with continued gusty winds and snowfall.
