Judicial Investigation Launched Against Cochin Hospital for Rape Incident
A judicial investigation has been opened against Cochin Hospital in Paris following a rape incident involving a patient in late 2022. The investigation, confirmed by the Paris prosecutor's office, is focused on charges of endangering the lives of others, unintentional injuries, and failure to assist a person in danger. This development comes after the conviction of the attacker, Faid Abdellah, who was sentenced to 11 years in prison for the rape of a 34-year-old woman, referred to as Isabelle, who was unconscious at the time of the assault.
The incident occurred on the night of October 27 to 28, 2022, when Isabelle was admitted to the emergency room after suffering a head injury. While she was incapacitated, Abdellah assaulted her. He was apprehended shortly after the attack while in possession of the victim's credit card. The victim's legal team expressed satisfaction with the decision to open a judicial investigation, emphasizing the need for accountability from the hospital regarding the alleged failings that allowed the assault to occur.
Hospital's Response and Ongoing Investigations
In response to the allegations, Assistance publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) stated that it does not comment on ongoing legal proceedings. However, the institution previously expressed its support for the victim and mentioned an internal investigation into the incident. The CGT union representing hospital staff has condemned the events as
stating that they had previously raised concerns about staffing shortages that may have contributed to the incident.
The victim's lawyers have highlighted the serious nature of the case, asserting that the hospital must now face scrutiny in court. They argue that the circumstances surrounding the incident reveal significant institutional failings that need to be addressed to prevent future occurrences. As the investigation unfolds, the focus will remain on the hospital's responsibility in ensuring the safety and well-being of its patients.
