Storms Bert and Caetano Cause Widespread Disruption in the UK and France
Storm "Bert" has wreaked havoc across the United Kingdom, leaving approximately 60,000 homes without power as it brought strong winds of up to 130 km/h, particularly affecting North Wales. The storm has been classified as a "multi-hazard event" by the British Meteorological Service (Met Office), which has issued yellow weather warnings for heavy rain, snow, and flooding. The storm's impact has been severe, with tragic incidents reported, including the death of a man in his 60s due to a falling tree and another fatal car accident in Bradford.
Emergency services have been active, rescuing ten individuals, including five children, from a house in Llanarmon Dyffryn Curiog following a landslide. Transportation has been heavily disrupted, with flights diverted and train services canceled, particularly affecting routes in Scotland and northern England.
Meanwhile, in France, Storm "Caetano" has also caused significant power outages, with 47,000 homes still without electricity as of Saturday morning. The storm, which passed through the region, initially left 270,000 homes without power, primarily affecting Normandy and Pays de la Loire. Enedis, the electricity network manager, reported that over 80% of affected customers had their power restored by Saturday morning, with 2,200 technicians deployed for repairs.
Both storms have highlighted the challenges posed by severe weather conditions, with authorities urging residents to avoid non-essential travel and remain vigilant as further weather warnings remain in effect.
