Alarming Rise in Anti-Semitism Among Young French Citizens
A recent poll conducted by the French Jewish Council has revealed troubling trends regarding anti-Semitic sentiments in France, particularly among the youth. The survey, which was reported by Yedioth Ahronoth, indicates that 12% of the overall population and a staggering 20% of individuals under 35 expressed that they would be pleased if Jews left France. This alarming statistic highlights a growing intolerance that is concerning to many observers.
The Ipsos poll, conducted in September, further underscores the prevalence of anti-Semitic beliefs among the French populace. Nearly half of the respondents (46%) agreed with at least six out of twelve anti-Semitic statements. Notably, 23% of those surveyed believe that Jews are not as French as others, suggesting a troubling perception of Jewish integration into French society. Additionally, 52% of participants indicated that Jews are more loyal to Israel than to France, while 46% held the belief that Jews are wealthier than the average French citizen.
Mixed Views on Jewish Community and Israel
Despite these negative sentiments, the survey also revealed a more complex picture. While 75% of French citizens expressed positive views towards Jews, only 26% held favorable opinions of the Israeli government, and a mere 21% viewed Israel positively, a decline from 27% in 2020. In contrast, 40% of respondents expressed positive views of Palestinians, although this did not extend to Hamas.
The study also found that only 36% of respondents considered Israel a democratic state, and just 29% believed that Israel genuinely seeks peace. However, in a somewhat hopeful note, 89% of French citizens agreed that no justification exists for anti-Semitism, indicating a strong societal consensus against hate.
