Flooding Crisis in Al-Jazeera Aba Due to Dam Closure
Sudanese citizens are facing a dire situation as the White Nile floods engulf residential neighborhoods in Al-Jazeera Aba, following the closure of the Jebel Awliya Dam by the Rapid Support Forces. Video footage shared on social media platforms shows floodwaters surrounding homes, prompting residents to evacuate their belongings to prevent loss and damage. The hashtag #Aljazeera_Aba_is_sinking has gained traction as citizens rally online to raise awareness about the catastrophic conditions they are enduring.
The flooding has led to significant displacement, with thousands of families, including vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly, in urgent need of assistance. Activists have described the situation as a silent suffering, with many calling for immediate intervention to save affected residents. Local reports indicate that entire neighborhoods, such as Al-Inqaz, have experienced total collapse due to the relentless floodwaters.
The Minister of Infrastructure in White Nile State, Mohamed Al-Hassan, attributed the rising water levels to the dam's closure, which has been under the control of the Rapid Support Forces since the onset of conflict between them and the Sudanese army over two years ago. In response to the crisis, the Ministry has dispatched teams to various affected areas to rehabilitate protective measures against flooding.
Conversely, the Rapid Support Forces have accused the Sudanese army of conducting air strikes and artillery shelling in the region, further complicating the situation. The United Nations International Organization for Migration has reported that the floods have displaced families from multiple neighborhoods and schools that were previously sheltering displaced individuals.
