Clashes in Al-Jazeera State Lead to Deaths and Displacement in Sudan
Recent clashes in Al-Jazeera State, Sudan, have resulted in multiple deaths and injuries as fighting erupted between the popular resistance and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Local sources reported that the town of Al-Takina was attacked by RSF forces, prompting a response from volunteers in the popular resistance. The Sudanese army intervened with airstrikes targeting RSF gatherings in the area. Al-Takina, located approximately 100 km north of Wad Madani, is home to around 50,000 residents, many of whom are displaced individuals fleeing ongoing conflicts since December.
Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in El Fasher
In parallel, the capital of North Darfur State, El Fasher, is experiencing a significant wave of displacement as over 3,200 residents have fled in the past five days due to escalating violence. Adam Rijal, a spokesman for the General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugees Camps in Darfur, reported that many displaced families are arriving in Tawila and surrounding areas, facing dire humanitarian conditions without adequate food, water, or medical assistance. The situation has worsened since fighting intensified in El Fasher last May, leading to a mass exodus towards Tawila. Since the outbreak of war in April 2023, more than 11 million people have been displaced, with 26 million facing severe food shortages, according to UN estimates.
