Outrage Over Violations by Rapid Support Forces in Al-Jazeera State
In a recent wave of violence, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been accused of committing egregious violations against civilians in Al-Jazeera State, central Sudan. Reports indicate that between October 20 and 25, RSF fighters launched major attacks on several villages, resulting in significant loss of life and widespread suffering. According to the Al Jazeera Conference human rights platform, the assault on Al-Sariha village alone left 124 dead, over 200 wounded, and approximately 150 individuals arrested.
Local media have highlighted that these brutal acts, including killings, kidnappings, forced displacements, and public humiliation, were retaliatory measures following the defection of RSF commander Abu Aqla Kikil to the Sudanese army. UN Humanitarian Coordinator Clementine Nkweta Salami condemned the actions, stating that RSF fighters have indiscriminately shot civilians, perpetrated sexual violence, looted properties, and set farms ablaze. As the humanitarian crisis unfolds, activists and platforms have circulated distressing images of the violence, further amplifying calls for justice and protection for the affected communities.
Calls for Intervention and Accountability
The ongoing atrocities have sparked outrage among Sudanese activists and the international community. Many are calling for immediate intervention from international human rights organizations to investigate these crimes and hold the perpetrators accountable. Activists have expressed despair over the situation, with one stating, "Sudan is being treated unfairly by the media. An entire state has been annihilated, including its men, women, and children." The acting governor of Al-Jazeera State, Al-Tahir Ibrahim Al-Khair, declared a state of general mobilization to combat the RSF's actions, labeling them as terrorist and rebellious.
As a result of the violence, thousands of families have been displaced, seeking refuge in various areas within the state and neighboring regions. The Preparatory Committee of the Sudanese Doctors Syndicate has urged the United Nations and the international community to facilitate safe corridors for humanitarian aid and to address the escalating crisis, which they describe as genocide. The RSF, however, has denied the allegations, claiming that their leadership prohibits mistreatment of civilians and promises prosecution for any violators.
The situation in Al-Jazeera State remains dire, with urgent calls for protection and justice for the civilians caught in the crossfire of this conflict.
