Discover how Eurostar and SkyTeam are making travel easier with a single ticket system combining air and rail, while Portugal introduces a revolutionary 20-euro train ticket for affordable travel across the country.

Eurostar and SkyTeam Revolutionize Travel with Single Ticket Booking

Starting in the first half of 2025, travelers will be able to book a single ticket that combines air and rail travel thanks to a groundbreaking partnership between Eurostar and the SkyTeam airline alliance. This collaboration, announced on September 25, aims to simplify the travel process by integrating air and rail services into one seamless reservation system, making it easier for passengers while promoting an environmentally friendly travel option.

SkyTeam, which includes major airlines such as Air France, KLM, and Delta Air Lines, is venturing into rail travel for the first time by partnering with Eurostar, a key player in Western Europe's rail transport. Eurostar connects major cities like London, Brussels, and Amsterdam, and this partnership is expected to enhance its ambition of transporting 30 million passengers annually. The initiative is designed to cater to the growing demand for sustainable travel options.

Travelers will benefit significantly from this partnership, as it allows them to book a flight with a SkyTeam airline and a Eurostar train journey in one go. For instance, a passenger arriving from New York can easily transition from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport to a train heading to London or Brussels without the hassle of multiple bookings. Currently, about 13% of Eurostar passengers utilize SkyTeam's hubs, showcasing the demand for this integration. Additionally, passengers will enjoy perks such as access to airport lounges and priority services, even when transferring from plane to train.

This partnership echoes the earlier “Train + Air” service launched by SNCF in 1995, but it expands the scope to include international travel across the UK, Belgium, and the Netherlands, creating a more extensive intermodal network. Eurostar’s CEO, Gwendoline Cazenave, emphasizes the initiative's focus on providing travelers with a sustainable way to explore Europe, while SkyTeam's CEO, Patrick Roux, highlights the alliance's commitment to responsible travel experiences.

Portugal Introduces Affordable 20-Euro Train Ticket

In a notable move towards affordable rail travel, Portugal plans to introduce a 20-euro monthly train ticket, which will grant access to all urban, regional, and inter-regional trains, including the Intercidades network. This initiative was announced by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro in August and is seen as an investment in people and the environment.

While Germany offers a similar 49-euro ticket for nationwide travel, Portugal's new ticket aims to significantly reduce costs for commuters. The 20-euro ticket will exclude high-speed trains like the Alfa Pendular, which are comparable to Germany's ICE trains. The implementation date for this ticket is still pending, with expectations set for autumn, though specific details remain unclear.

Despite the potential benefits, Portugal's rail system faces challenges, including outdated trains and infrastructure issues that could hinder the service's effectiveness. Current reports indicate that many trains are aging, and there are delays in the delivery of new models. The anticipated increase in demand for the 20-euro ticket may also strain the existing infrastructure, which is not fully equipped to handle longer trains or increased passenger volumes. Nevertheless, the ticket represents a significant cost-saving opportunity for travelers, as a monthly ticket from Porto to Lisbon currently costs 473.15 euros, a stark contrast to the upcoming 20-euro option.
