Three Arab Villages Recognized as Best Tourist Destinations for 2024

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has announced that three Arab towns have been selected among the best tourist villages in the world for 2024. The villages of Abu Ghusoun and Gharb Suhail in Egypt, along with the Abu Nuqta castles in Saudi Arabia, were recognized for their commitment to sustainable tourism practices and cultural heritage preservation. This selection is part of a broader initiative that evaluated over 260 applications from more than 60 countries, highlighting the importance of rural tourism in promoting local economies and cultural diversity.

Highlights of the Selected Villages

Abu Nuqta Castles, located in the historic village of Tabb in Saudi Arabia, is noted for its unique approach to heritage preservation. The local community employs environmentally friendly techniques in building and restoring structures, emphasizing sustainability. The village also features innovative seed storage methods that have been practiced for centuries, ensuring agricultural resilience.

Abu Ghusoun, situated within the Wadi El Gemal Reserve on the Red Sea coast, is celebrated for its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. The village supports local artisans through handicraft workshops, connecting them to global markets while preserving traditional crafts. Visitors can enjoy mountain safaris and diving in crystal-clear waters, making it a prime destination for eco-tourism.

Gharb Suhail, a vibrant Nubian village near Aswan, offers a glimpse into ancient Nubian culture with its colorful architecture and rich traditions. The village is renowned for its music and art, providing visitors with an immersive cultural experience. Activities such as fishing and desert adventures further enhance its appeal as a tourist destination.

Recognition of Spanish Villages

In addition to the Arab towns, two medieval towns in Spain, Aínsa and Mura, have also been awarded the title of Best Tourist Villages for 2024. This recognition underscores the UNWTO's commitment to promoting rural tourism that respects local cultures and environments. Aínsa, known for its medieval charm and natural parks, and Mura, with its picturesque landscapes, exemplify successful rural tourism models that attract visitors while preserving their heritage.

The UNWTO's initiative aims to empower rural communities and promote sustainable tourism practices globally. With a total of 55 villages recognized this year, the program continues to grow, encouraging more destinations to adopt sustainable practices and enhance their cultural offerings.
