Qatar's Emir Calls for Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Conflict
At the inaugural Gulf-European summit held in Brussels, the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon. His address, which marked the opening of the summit attended by 33 heads of state and prime ministers, highlighted the devastating impact of Israel's military actions in these regions. Sheikh Tamim urged the international community to adhere to UN Resolution 1701, aimed at maintaining peace between Lebanon and Israel. He asserted that the current hostilities necessitate a comprehensive resolution to the long-standing conflict, advocating for the establishment of a Palestinian state as a foundational step towards peace.
In his remarks, the Emir expressed concern over the escalating violence and its implications for global stability, drawing parallels with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He underscored the importance of Gulf-European cooperation, noting the historical ties built on mutual interests and respect for international law. The summit is a significant milestone, being the first of its kind since official relations began in 1989, and it reflects the strengthening partnership between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and the European Union. In 2023, trade between these regions reached approximately $204.3 billion, with GCC exports to the EU accounting for about $106.3 billion. This economic relationship presents opportunities for further collaboration and a strategic roadmap for future partnerships.
