Sources familiar with the investigation of Siegal Yana Itzkovitz, the mother suspected of murdering her 6-year-old son Liam, revealed today that she has been released from the hospital and has undergone an initial investigation. During this investigation, Itzkovitz provided detailed accounts of the tragic events, fully acknowledging her actions. Following her medical treatment, she was transferred to Shavas and will soon be examined by a district psychiatrist.
Liam will be laid to rest today at the Givat Shaul cemetery. The family has issued a statement inviting the public to attend the funeral but requested that attendees refrain from filming the ceremony. Siegal's detention was extended yesterday, and the court has ordered an expedited psychiatric evaluation. Itzkovitz had resided in Dimona before moving to Herzliya, and there were no prior issues reported to the welfare department in either location.
Neighbors of the Itzkovitz family in Herzliya describe Siegal as a devoted mother and a loving pet owner. The family had moved to Herzliya from Dimona in 2021, having previously lived in Modi'in. Despite their seemingly normal life, an incident a few months ago involved neighbors calling the police due to screams from their apartment. However, no investigation was opened at that time.
The police are currently investigating whether there were any recent incidents of violence between Siegal and her husband and are trying to understand her mental state. On the day of the murder, Siegal experienced what is believed to be a psychotic episode while alone with her son. She brutally murdered Liam and the family dog using an ax. After the act, she attempted to attack people on the street and at a nearby mall, where she was eventually subdued by a security guard and arrested by the police.
Siegal is suspected of multiple serious crimes, including murder with special cruelty, helpless murder, killing or harming an animal, and wounding or maiming. Due to her mental state, she has not been able to provide coherent answers and may undergo further psychiatric evaluations. The police are conducting toxicology tests to determine if any substances contributed to her psychotic episode.
