Macron Calls for De-escalation in Lebanon Amid Ongoing Conflict
In a critical address to the United Nations Security Council on September 25, French President Emmanuel Macron urged Israel to halt its military actions in Lebanon, emphasizing the urgent need to prevent war in the region. "There cannot and must not be a war in Lebanon," Macron stated, warning that Hezbollah's actions risk dragging the Lebanese populace into further conflict. He called for both Israel to cease its strikes and Hezbollah to stop its rocket fire, advocating for a diplomatic solution to protect civilian lives.
Macron also addressed the prolonged conflict in Gaza, condemning the October 7 terrorist attacks by Hamas and mourning the victims, including 48 French citizens. He recognized Israel's right to self-defense but criticized the ongoing war in Gaza, stating, "These deaths are a source of hatred and resentment. The ceasefire must come as soon as possible. It is a question of political will." His remarks underscore France's commitment to advocating for peace and stability in the Middle East.
Escalation of Violence and Humanitarian Crisis in Lebanon
The situation in Lebanon has deteriorated sharply, with Israeli Air Force jets conducting extensive strikes against Hezbollah positions. Reports indicate that around 250 aircraft were deployed over two days, targeting areas in southern Lebanon and around Haifa, where nearly two million residents are at risk. The Lebanese authorities report that the conflict has displaced approximately 20,000 people, with civilians fleeing to safer regions amid the chaos.
Casualties from the airstrikes have risen significantly, with reports indicating at least 558 deaths, including 50 children. The UN has also reported the tragic loss of two staff members in the conflict. Israeli forces targeted a residential building in Beirut, believed to house a key Hezbollah military commander, resulting in further destruction and loss of life.
International leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, have called for a diplomatic resolution to the escalating conflict. Biden emphasized the need for a truce and the release of hostages, while Pezeshkian warned against allowing Lebanon to become another Gaza. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has continued its rocket attacks into northern Israel, prompting a vigorous military response from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), which reported significant damage to Hezbollah's military capabilities.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue military operations against Hezbollah, asserting that Israel's fight is not with the Lebanese people but with the terrorist organization led by Hassan Nasrallah. The ongoing violence has led to flight suspensions by major airlines, further isolating the region as humanitarian concerns mount.
