Macron Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Lebanon Amid Escalating Conflict
French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Hezbollah to "immediately stop" its bombing of Israel, emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire in Lebanon. In a recent phone conversation with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Macron highlighted the importance of national unity and stability in Lebanon. He urged all political factions to unite in order to address the ongoing crisis, advocating for a political framework that includes the election of a president who can ensure national cohesion.
Macron expressed his deep concern over the escalating Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, which have had devastating effects on the civilian population. The Elysee Palace reported that the French leader reiterated France's commitment to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and condemned the recent attacks on UN personnel, calling them "unjustified."
In light of the growing tensions, Macron announced that France would continue to work towards mobilizing the international community to support Lebanon's sovereignty and its people. A significant international conference is set to take place in Paris on October 24, aimed at addressing the humanitarian needs of Lebanon amidst the ongoing conflict.
The situation has escalated dramatically, with the Israeli military reporting that Hezbollah launched approximately 320 projectiles at Israel during the recent Yom Kippur holiday. The conflict has resulted in casualties, with nine reported deaths in Israeli strikes, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. Additionally, five UNIFIL personnel were injured in recent hostilities, as the UN force accused Israeli troops of firing on their positions "repeatedly and deliberately."
