Lebanese Government Seeks Ceasefire Amid Escalating Violence
Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced that the government is formally requesting a ceasefire from the UN Security Council in light of increasing violence in the region. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Mikati emphasized the importance of implementing Resolution 1701 and electing a new president for the republic. He stated that the Lebanese army is prepared to enforce this resolution with support from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Mikati revealed that American guarantees have been secured to help mitigate the escalation of Israeli military actions in Beirut and its southern suburbs. He expressed hope that these assurances would help prevent Israel from targeting critical infrastructure, including Beirut airport and land crossings. Despite ongoing discussions in the Security Council, Mikati noted that a definitive agreement has yet to be reached.
Current Situation in Lebanon and Israel's Actions
Since the onset of the current conflict on October 7, 2023, Israeli military operations have expanded into Lebanon, resulting in significant casualties and displacement. Reports indicate that the Israeli airstrikes on Lebanese territory have led to over 1,500 deaths and approximately 4,500 injuries, with a considerable number of victims being women and children. The conflict has also displaced more than 1.34 million people, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
In light of these developments, Mikati stressed the need to implement the Taif Agreement, which aims to bolster the sovereignty of the Lebanese state. He dismissed discussions surrounding Resolution 1559, which calls for the disarmament of Lebanese armed groups, arguing that it could create further discord among the Lebanese populace. Mikati reiterated that the only legitimate weapon should be that of the state, underscoring the importance of national unity and sovereignty.
