Kibbutz Nir Oz Invites Netanyahu for First Visit on National Day of Mourning
Kibbutz Nir Oz has extended a heartfelt invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit the kibbutz for the first time on the National Day of Mourning, commemorating the tragic events of October 7. This date marks a significant moment for the community, which suffered devastating losses during the attacks that day.
On October 7, Kibbutz Nir Oz was uniquely affected as it was the only kibbutz not reached by security forces during the initial hours of the assault, resulting in the murder and kidnapping of over a quarter of its population. Currently, 29 residents remain captives of Hamas in Gaza. In their invitation, the residents expressed the profound impact of that day on their lives, stating, "For us, there is no need for a national day of mourning. Mourning has been an integral part of our daily routine for over a year."
The letter to Netanyahu emphasized the community's desire for his leadership and presence on this somber occasion. The residents highlighted that Nir Oz has become a symbol of both loss and resilience, showcasing the heroism of individuals who took on the responsibility that the state failed to fulfill – the protection of its citizens. They urged Netanyahu to come and witness the reality of their situation, where life and death coexist amid the ruins of their homes.
In closing, the community expressed hope that the Prime Minister's visit would send a strong message of commitment from the Israeli government to ensure the safety and rehabilitation of the Western Negev and its residents, particularly in their ongoing efforts to secure the return of the 101 abductees.
