Hurricane Milton Causes Devastation in Florida
Hurricane Milton has left a tragic impact on Florida, resulting in at least ten fatalities as it swept across the state, causing tornadoes and severe flooding. The storm, which made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane on October 9, 2024, has been described as a significant weather event, but authorities noted that the worst-case scenario was avoided.
According to U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, the fatalities were primarily caused by tornadoes that struck the region shortly before the hurricane made landfall. Reports indicate that four deaths were confirmed in St. Lucie County alone, where emergency crews are actively conducting rescue operations. In addition to the fatalities, over 3.1 million homes are currently without power, and significant damage has been reported in areas like St. Petersburg, where the local baseball stadium suffered extensive roof damage and a crane was overturned.
Despite the devastation, officials expressed relief that the storm's impact was not as severe as initially feared, especially considering the recent devastation from Hurricane Helene just weeks prior. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stated that while the storm was significant, the marine inundation was less severe than expected.
As Milton continues to produce powerful winds and heavy rain across central and eastern Florida, residents have been urged to stay indoors and avoid hazardous conditions such as downed power lines and debris. President Joe Biden has also reached out to the state’s governor, emphasizing the need for safety during this challenging time.
