Human Rights Watch Report on October 7 Attacks
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has published a comprehensive report detailing the war crimes committed by Palestinian armed groups during the October 7 attack on Israel. This report, one of the most in-depth investigations into the attack, highlights a range of crimes that violate international humanitarian law. According to HRW, the crimes committed include deliberate and indiscriminate attacks against civilians, intentional killings, cruel and inhumane treatment, sexual and gender-based violence, and the use of human shields.
Belkis Wille, associate director of HRW, stated that the scale and coordination of the attack were unprecedented, with more than 815 civilians killed and 251 people kidnapped, many of whom are still held captive. The report also identifies several armed groups, including Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, as responsible for these heinous acts.
Israeli Strikes and Humanitarian Crisis
In response to the October 7 attacks, Israel has launched a series of retaliatory strikes on the Gaza Strip, resulting in significant civilian casualties. On Tuesday, Israeli bombings killed 57 people, including those sheltering in a school. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the need to increase pressure on Hamas, stating that the military campaign aims to eliminate top commanders and thousands of terrorists.
The ongoing conflict has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with over 38,700 people killed so far, mostly civilians. The UN and various NGOs have condemned the blockade and the obstacles imposed by Israeli forces, which hinder the delivery of essential aid and fuel. The situation has left many Gazans in dire conditions, with a significant portion of the population facing the risk of famine.
HRW has called for the immediate release of civilian hostages and for those responsible for the war crimes to be brought to justice. The organization also urges international governments to use their influence to end the violence and ensure accountability for the atrocities committed on both sides.
