Hamas Condemns Treatment of Palestinian Prisoners in Ofer Prison
The Islamic Resistance Movement, known as Hamas, has condemned the recent broadcast by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, which showcased the treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Ofer prison. The footage, released on social media, has been described by Hamas as a failed attempt by Israel to distract from its own failures and the ongoing occupation.
In a statement, Hamas labeled the scenes as a revelation of the 'true criminal face' of the Israeli occupation, asserting that the images of abuse and torture reflect the dire conditions faced by Palestinian prisoners. The timing of the release, coinciding with the anniversary of the Battle of the Flood of Al-Aqsa, was criticized as an attempt to overshadow the occupation's failures and the resilience of the Palestinian resistance.
Hamas highlighted that the treatment of prisoners, which includes torture, deprivation of rights, and medical neglect, constitutes war crimes and breaches international laws concerning prisoners of war. The organization called for global human rights institutions to take action against these violations and urged families of prisoners and supporters to intensify their advocacy for the rights of those incarcerated.
The situation in Israeli prisons has escalated since October 7, 2023, with reports indicating that over 11,100 Palestinians are currently imprisoned, many subjected to extreme measures including starvation and medical neglect. Hamas reaffirmed its commitment to the prisoners, emphasizing that their struggle will continue until freedom is achieved.
