A serious failure suffered in Microsoft systems as a result of the update of a cybersecurity component of the Crowdstrike company caused numerous incidents globally this Friday in airlines, airports, payment systems, health and media, among other services. Many already consider it the largest computer blackout in history.
This update is causing technical problems in Microsoft Windows clients, a problem that is reflected in the appearance of a 'blue screen' that prevents its correct operation.
Crowdstrike, a service provider for some of the largest companies in the world such as Microsoft or the computer manufacturer Dell, is already applying mitigation and recovery measures to the affected systems and clients, managing to lift several of these systems. In parallel, it is working on a new update to replace the one that is causing problems.
Why the global fall of Microsoft occurred: The CEO of Crowdstrike, George Kurtz, stressed on the social network customers to get the latest updates.
As Microsoft explained, the configuration change in a part of the workload of Azure servers (the cloud computing platform created by the technology company to manage applications and services) caused a storage and processing interruption that affected to Microsoft 365 services.
This caused the appearance of blue or 'death' screens that showed all over the world that the systems had stopped working, and that the servers had to be restarted.
Microsoft indicated that the underlying cause of the issue has been resolved and full functionality has been restored to several Microsoft 365 apps and services, with residual impact still affecting some apps and services.
The Microsoft 365 engineering team continues to take additional mitigation actions and is seeing an increase in functionality and availability while continuing to move toward a full recovery by treating this issue 'with the highest possible priority.'
The tech giant is working to redirect affected traffic to alternative systems to alleviate this impact in a more convenient way.
Global chaos due to the fall of Microsoft: This software interruption linked to Microsoft systems has caused global problems in a multitude of sectors, with the airline industry being one of the most affected.
These problems have spread across half the world, with several large US airlines being grounded, incidents that have also affected the main airports and airlines in Europe and Asia.
At a global level, the problems have affected some of the main international media, the Paris 2024 computer system at the gates of the Olympic Games, the London Stock Exchange, as well as various railway companies.
In Argentina, meanwhile, the impact was marginal.
