Erdogan Offers Mediation Between Sudan and UAE to Resolve Conflict
In a significant diplomatic move, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Türkiye's readiness to mediate in the ongoing conflict between Sudan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). During a phone call with Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereignty Council, Erdogan emphasized the importance of Sudan's sovereignty and territorial integrity. This initiative aims to promote peace in a region that has been destabilized by accusations of UAE support for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have been engaged in armed conflict with the Sudanese army since April 2023.
Erdogan's proposal for mediation comes amid credible allegations from the Sudanese army regarding UAE's involvement, which the UAE has consistently denied, labeling the accusations as lacking reliable evidence. Erdogan reiterated that Turkish mediation would adhere to principles focused on preserving Sudan's unity and preventing foreign intervention. He drew parallels to Türkiye's recent success in mediating between Somalia and Ethiopia, which culminated in the signing of the 'Ankara Declaration' aimed at fostering cooperation and peace in the Horn of Africa.
Sudan Welcomes Turkish Mediation Amid Ongoing Conflict
The Sudanese leadership has welcomed Erdogan's mediation initiative, with Al-Burhan expressing hope that Türkiye's involvement could help end the ongoing war triggered by the RSF rebellion. The conflict has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and displaced more than 14 million people, according to UN estimates. Al-Burhan also highlighted the need for enhanced bilateral relations, urging increased Turkish investments in infrastructure, energy, and agriculture to support Sudan's struggling economy.
Erdogan's call also addressed the broader Syrian crisis, where he stated that the Syrian people must determine their future after years of conflict. He reaffirmed Türkiye's commitment to supporting Syria's political unity and the Syrian Interim Government, ensuring that Syria does not pose a threat to its neighbors. As the situation in Sudan remains critical, Erdogan's diplomatic efforts may play a pivotal role in shaping the region's stability and future.
