Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Visit Île aux Moines for European Heritage Days
In a much-anticipated event, President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, will visit Île aux Moines on Friday as part of the 41st edition of the European Heritage Days. Joined by Stéphane Bern, head of the Heritage Mission, the visit highlights the island's historical significance and ongoing restoration efforts. Located in the Sept-Îles archipelago off the coast of Perros-Guirrec in Côtes-d'Armor, Île aux Moines is home to 18th-century fortifications, including a fort, barracks, and a lighthouse, all classified as historical monuments since 2024.
The restoration of the fort and barracks is set to commence this fall, supported by a €350,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery. The lighthouse, managed by the Conservatoire du littoral, is slated for restoration in 2025 to be converted into a scientific lodge. The island is not only a historical site but also a biodiversity reserve, showcasing the rich ecological heritage of the region.
Heritage Lottery's Impact Since 2017
Since taking office in 2017, President Macron has prioritized cultural preservation through initiatives like the Mission Bern and the establishment of the Heritage Lottery. These efforts have mobilized over €280 million to assist nearly 950 sites across France. Previous visits during the Heritage Days included the Notre-Dame collegiate church in Semur-en-Auxois in 2023 and the Italian-style theatre in Guéret in 2022, both benefiting from the Heritage Lottery.
Additionally, the Élysée Palace will open its doors to the public this weekend, expecting around 10,000 visitors. Guests will have the opportunity to tour significant areas such as the Salle des Fêtes, Winter Garden, Grand Staircase, and the historic Golden Salon, which has served as the office for presidents of the Fifth Republic.
