Armed Robbery at Hiéron Museum in Paray-le-Monial
On November 21, 2024, the Hiéron Museum in Paray-le-Monial, Saône-et-Loire, was the target of a brazen armed robbery that resulted in the theft of a national treasure valued at several million euros. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. when four masked individuals arrived on motorbikes, with three entering the museum while one remained outside as a lookout. The robbers brandished rifles, firing shots to instill panic among the approximately twenty visitors and staff present at the time.
The centerpiece of the museum, a monumental artwork titled "Via Vitae" (1904) by renowned goldsmith Joseph Chaumet, was nearly entirely looted. This impressive piece, which depicts the life of Jesus and is classified as a national treasure by the Ministry of Culture, is estimated to be worth between 4 and 7 million euros. The robbers used a chainsaw to cut through the armoured glass protecting the artwork, stealing its gold and ivory statuettes along with emerald decorations, and even damaging part of its marble base. The entire operation was executed in a mere three minutes, showcasing meticulous planning by the criminals.
Following the theft, the robbers fled the scene on their motorbikes, strategically throwing nails onto the road to disable pursuing police vehicles, indicating a well-prepared escape plan. The mayor of Paray-le-Monial, Jean-Marc Nesmes, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a significant loss for both the city and national heritage. He noted that the museum staff and visitors were left traumatized, with some seeking refuge in a nearby house during the chaos.
Historical Context of the Hiéron Museum
The Musée du Hiéron is one of France's oldest museums dedicated to sacred art, and this is not the first time it has faced criminal activity. In 2017, the museum was burglarized, resulting in the theft of two Romay crowns by goldsmith Paul Brunet, and there was an attempted burglary in September 2022. The recent robbery has raised concerns about the security measures in place at such culturally significant institutions.
In response to the incident, France's Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, condemned the robbery as an unacceptable act that jeopardizes the country's cultural heritage. As investigations continue, authorities are working to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the stolen treasures.
