Elton John's Health Challenges: A Struggle with Vision Loss
In a heartfelt performance on December 1, 2024, at the premiere of the musical "The Devil Wears Prada" in London, legendary singer Elton John opened up about his deteriorating eyesight, revealing that he has lost his sight completely due to a severe eye infection. "As some of you may know, I have problems and have lost my sight," he stated. Despite his inability to see the performance, he expressed his enjoyment of the evening, highlighting the support of his husband, David Furnish, who assisted him on stage. John praised Furnish as his rock during this challenging time, stating, "I have not been able to attend many premieres because I have lost my sight, so it is difficult for me to see it, but I love hearing it."
The 77-year-old singer's vision problems stem from an infection he contracted while vacationing in the south of France in July 2024. This condition has severely impacted his ability to create music, as he revealed in a recent interview with "Good Morning America." "I can't read anything, can't watch anything," John lamented, explaining that his right eye is completely blind and his left eye is also not functioning well. As a result, he has been unable to work on his upcoming album, which was set for a Christmas release. "I'm a bit stuck at the moment because I can't go into the studio and record," he admitted, emphasizing the difficulties he faces in reading lyrics.
Despite these health challenges, John remains active in the music industry. He recently performed at the Royal Albert Hall alongside Dua Lipa and participated in the Royal Variety Show attended by King Charles. His resilience is notable, as he has previously overcome significant health issues, including knee and hip surgeries and treatment for prostate cancer. John, a father of two young sons, Zachary and Elijah, is focusing on improving his eye health and is grateful for the support from his medical team and family.
