Investigation Launched Against Egyptian Singer Sherine Abdel Wahab
The Musicians Syndicate of Egypt has decided to refer popular singer Sherine Abdel Wahab for investigation following controversial remarks made during her recent concert in Kuwait. Sherine sparked outrage when she commented on the late composer Mohamed Rahim, stating, "We are doing him a permanent disgrace." This statement was met with immediate backlash, prompting Sherine to apologize and clarify that her comments were a slip of the tongue.
The head of the Musicians Syndicate condemned her remarks as "absurd and disregarding religious, societal, humanitarian and artistic values," emphasizing the need for accountability. The decision to investigate was made after discussions among union council members, highlighting the importance of respecting the sanctity of death and the contributions of artists like Rahim to the music industry.
Public Reaction and Family Response
The captain of the Musicians Syndicate, Al-Naqeeb, expressed his disappointment over Sherine's comments, which he described as inappropriate jokes. He noted that her statements, which included phrases like "we are doing something bad" and references to a trend, were accompanied by laughter that many found offensive. Al-Naqeeb stressed that Sherine had multiple opportunities to mend her relationship with the public and the union, given her past struggles, but emphasized that respect for the deceased must prevail.
Taher Rahim, the brother of the late composer, voiced his dissatisfaction with Sherine's behavior, stating that it disrespected his brother's legacy. However, he acknowledged that fellow artist Tamer Hosny reached out to clarify that Sherine's comments were unintentional and that she intended to honor Rahim during her performance.
