Daraa's Tensions Escalate: Syrian Regime Threatens Town with Gaza-Like Fate

Images from the reference sources
Tensions rise in Daraa as the Syrian regime threatens the town of Mahaja with a fate similar to Gaza, following violent clashes. Local resistance and fears of civilian casualties loom large.

Daraa has been enduring a deteriorating security situation since the Syrian regime regained control in 2018. Recently, Brigadier General Louay Al-Ali, head of the Syrian regime’s military security branch in Daraa, issued alarming threats to the residents of Mahaja, a town in southern Syria. During a meeting with local leaders, Al-Ali warned that if they did not surrender the fighters responsible for recent clashes with his armed group, the town would face a fate similar to Gaza, including potential besiegement and bombardment.

The tensions escalated following clashes that resulted in casualties on both sides, as local gunmen resisted Al-Ali's demands. The situation has been further complicated by the actions of the Military Security Branch, which has been accused of kidnappings for ransom and extortion against local shop owners. Amidst these conflicts, the Eighth Brigade of the Military Intelligence Division attempted to mediate a resolution, but the regime rejected outside intervention, exacerbating the local unrest.

Local activists express concern over the potential for military action against Mahaja, highlighting the risks of civilian casualties and displacement. Despite Al-Ali's threats, some believe that a military operation may not occur soon, as it would require significant resources and could lead to further instability in the region.
