Tragic Bombing in Idlib Countryside Claims Lives of Civilians
In a heartbreaking incident on Monday evening, the Syrian Civil Defense, known as the White Helmets, reported that four civilians lost their lives and thirteen others sustained injuries due to missile and artillery shelling by Syrian regime forces in the town of Kafriya, located in the Idlib countryside. Among the deceased were an elderly man and a woman, while the injured included six children and three women, with some in critical condition. This attack highlights the ongoing violence and instability in the region, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as children and women.
Continuous Attacks in Idlib
The bombardment did not stop at Kafriya; regime forces also targeted the city of Sarmin, east of Idlib. Earlier, on September 20, two individuals were killed and eight others injured in a similar attack on the town of Taftanaz. The Syrian Civil Defense has reported that since the beginning of this year, their teams have responded to over 650 attacks by regime forces and Russia, resulting in the deaths of 54 people, including 15 children and 6 women, and injuries to 245 individuals, among them 99 children and 29 women. This alarming trend underscores the dire humanitarian situation in the region.
Ceasefire Agreements and Ongoing Violations
Despite previous ceasefire agreements between Turkey and Russia aimed at stabilizing Idlib, including a memorandum signed in September 2018 and a new agreement in May 2020, violations by regime forces continue to plague the region. The ongoing shelling raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of these agreements and the safety of civilians caught in the conflict. As the situation evolves, the international community must remain vigilant and responsive to the humanitarian needs of those affected by the violence.
