Israeli Airstrikes Target Military Installations in Southern Syria
On October 1, 2024, the Israeli army executed a series of drone strikes against military sites belonging to the Syrian regime forces in southern Syria. The targeted areas included the eastern and northern countryside of Daraa Governorate, as well as the western countryside of Sweida Governorate. Among the most significant sites hit was the Tha’la military airport, where Israeli missiles struck, destroying critical air defense systems and causing significant damage.
The drone strikes resulted in the destruction of the early warning system located at the air defense radar battalion in the Tal Kharouf area. Furthermore, an air defense battalion of the 79th Brigade was targeted, along with the Izraa Agricultural Airport situated between the city of Izraa and the town of Namir, east of Daraa. Local reports indicate that Red Crescent ambulances were dispatched to the affected areas, with at least two members of the Syrian regime forces injured in the radar battalion.
Witnesses in the town of Nahta reported that the drone strikes were executed using stealth technology, making them difficult to detect. In response, ground anti-aircraft defenses opened fire in an attempt to intercept the drones. The explosions from the strikes were described as powerful, with thick smoke billowing from the Tha’la Airport and the Tal Kharouf radar battalion.
