Costa Rica Hosts 8th Sheikh Tamim Anti-Corruption Award Ceremony
The capital of Costa Rica, San Jose, was the venue for the prestigious eighth edition of the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award. The ceremony, held in collaboration with the United Nations, honored individuals and organizations making significant contributions to the fight against corruption. Attendees included the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Costa Rica's First Vice President, Stefan Brunner Neipej.
The award recognizes outstanding achievements across five categories: Outstanding Achievement in Combating Corruption, Academic Research and Educational Materials, Protecting Sport from Corruption, Innovation or Investigative Journalism, and Youth Creativity and Engagement. Notable winners included Dr. Mona Boushahin from Mexico for Outstanding Achievement, and Professor Robert Klitgaard from the USA, along with Professor Alberto Vannuchi, for their contributions to academic research.
Significance of the Sheikh Tamim Anti-Corruption Award
Launched in 2016, the Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award aims to promote good governance and transparency worldwide. It serves as a platform to recognize and support individuals dedicated to combating corruption, which poses a significant threat to global progress and societal well-being. The award not only highlights exemplary actions but also encourages the dissemination of anti-corruption models and raises awareness about the importance of establishing corruption-free societies.
The award has seen a total of 51 winners since its inception, with ceremonies held in various countries, including Austria, Switzerland, Malaysia, Rwanda, Tunisia, Qatar, and Uzbekistan. This year’s event continues to reinforce the global commitment to anti-corruption efforts and the importance of recognizing those who strive to make a difference.
