Incident Overview
On November 26, 2024, a serious incident unfolded in Colombes, Hauts-de-Seine, when a reckless driver struck a municipal police officer during a pursuit. The chase began around 4:45 p.m. after the driver, who was later identified as being under the influence of drugs, refused to comply with a routine check conducted by the national police on Avenue Kléber. Initially stopping for the police, the driver fled the scene, prompting a chase by municipal police motorcyclists.
Police Response and Injuries
The pursuit led the driver to a supermarket parking lot in Argenteuil, where he attempted to evade capture. In a dramatic turn, the driver reversed his vehicle, hitting one of the officers and injuring him in the legs. In response to the imminent danger, a second officer discharged his firearm in an attempt to stop the fleeing suspect, but the driver managed to escape. The injured officer was transported to Louis Mourier hospital, where he was treated and prescribed 15 days of temporary work interruption (ITT).
Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact
As of now, the suspect remains at large, and law enforcement agencies are actively searching for him. The incident has raised concerns about police safety and the risks faced by officers in the line of duty. Mayor Patrick Chaimovitch of Colombes praised the coordination between the municipal and national police forces, emphasizing their commitment to public safety. This incident is part of a troubling trend, as police officers in Colombes have faced similar dangers in the past, including a notable case in April 2020.
