Putin Establishes Marine Corps Day in Russia
On November 27, 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin officially signed a decree establishing Marine Corps Day in the Russian Armed Forces, a holiday that will be celebrated annually on the same date. This decree, published on the official legal information portal, amends previous presidential regulations regarding professional holidays and memorial days within the military.
Marine Corps Day has historical significance, commemorating the creation of the 'regiment of marine soldiers' by Tsar Peter the Great on November 27, 1705. This year marks the 319th anniversary of the Marine Corps, which has been recognized officially since 1996, following an order from the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy.
Admiral Alexander Moiseyev, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, expressed his congratulations to the Marines, stating, “Marines, you are the pride of the Navy, your glory has not faded since the time of Emperor Peter the Great.” He highlighted the Marines' exceptional skills and bravery demonstrated in various conflicts, including the Great Patriotic War and recent military operations in Ukraine.
Recognition of Marine Corps Contributions
The admiral praised the Marine Corps for their critical role in several military operations, particularly during the ongoing special military operation in Ukraine. He noted their significant contributions in battles across various regions, including Kyiv, Donetsk, and Mariupol, emphasizing their resilience and effectiveness in urban combat scenarios.
Military expert Alexei Leonkov elaborated on the capabilities of the Marine Corps, describing them as a highly effective military branch equipped primarily with amphibious vehicles for rapid coastal operations. He remarked on their ability to conduct successful city liberation operations alongside other mechanized units, positioning them as a vital component of Russia's special operations forces. Leonkov underscored the Marines' historical effectiveness and their ability to perform under challenging conditions with minimal personnel losses.
In celebration of Marine Corps Day, the TV tower in Simferopol will be illuminated with the message “Happy Marine Corps Day!” along with displays of naval equipment, further honoring the contributions of this elite military unit.
