Ursula von der Leyen's New Mandate: A Comprehensive Plan for Europe's Future
Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected to lead the European Commission, promising a robust agenda focused on housing, competitiveness, and social issues. Her re-election by a majority in the European Parliament signifies a commitment to address Europe's pressing challenges.
Addressing the Housing Crisis
Von der Leyen has announced a new 'European affordable housing plan,' aimed at tackling the housing crisis affecting people across Europe. The plan includes a strategy for construction and investment, allowing state aid and cohesion funds to support affordable housing. 'Prices and rents are skyrocketing. People are struggling to find affordable housing,' she remarked. The plan will inject liquidity into the market, enabling Member States to double their investments in affordable housing.
Boosting Competitiveness and Clean Industry
To ensure Europe's competitive edge, von der Leyen has proposed a competitiveness fund focused on supporting clean industries. She emphasized the need to reduce regulation and enhance the EU's competitive advantage. Additionally, she proposed a 'savings and investment union' to prevent companies and startups from leaving Europe, aiming for better integration of the continent's capital markets.
Strengthening Defense and Border Control
Von der Leyen has reiterated her promise to include a Defense Commissioner in her team and proposed tripling the number of border guards to 30,000 to strengthen Frontex, the EU border agency. 'We must strengthen Frontex to make it more effective while fully respecting fundamental rights,' she stated.
Tackling Extremism and Ensuring Stability
In response to the rise of far-right groups, von der Leyen pledged to fight against the extreme polarization of societies. 'I will never let the extreme polarization of our societies prevail,' she declared. She also addressed geopolitical tensions, emphasizing the need for stability amidst wars in Ukraine and Gaza. She criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for his recent meetings with Vladimir Putin, accusing him of playing into the Kremlin's hands.
Promoting a European Shield of Democracy
Von der Leyen proposed the creation of a 'European shield of democracy' to combat information manipulation and foreign interference. This new structure will bring together national agencies and include a European network of fact-checkers in all official languages, ensuring the integrity of information across the EU.
