Washington Opposes Permanent Israeli Military Base in Gaza
The United States has officially expressed its opposition to the establishment of a permanent Israeli military base in the Gaza Strip. This statement comes in response to a report by the New York Times, which indicated that the Israeli army is accelerating the construction of military facilities in the region. Satellite imagery reportedly shows significant construction activity in central Gaza, alongside the demolition of over 600 buildings, suggesting a long-term Israeli military presence is being planned.
US State Department Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel commented on the situation, stating that the US could not confirm the New York Times report but reiterated Secretary of State Anthony Blinken's longstanding opposition to a permanent Israeli presence in Gaza. Patel emphasized that any such development would contradict key principles outlined by Blinken, particularly regarding the preservation of Palestinian land and the prevention of forced displacement.
Pentagon Reiterates US Stance on Gaza Occupation
In addition to the State Department's comments, Pentagon spokesman General Pat Ryder reinforced the US position, stating that Israel should not maintain an occupation of Gaza once a ceasefire is achieved and the threat from Hamas is neutralized. Ryder highlighted the importance of reaching a ceasefire, securing the release of hostages, and ending the ongoing conflict. The Israeli military has responded to these claims, asserting that the current construction is for operational purposes and that any structures built could be dismantled swiftly if necessary.
