US Opposes Israeli Air Strikes on Beirut
The United States has expressed its opposition to the recent Israeli air strikes in Beirut, Lebanon, amid escalating violence and rising death tolls. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller conveyed concerns to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, highlighting a shift in Washington's tone regarding the situation. The strikes are part of Israel's intensified military operations against Hezbollah, which began following the killing of key group leaders, including Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah.
Rising Death Toll and Humanitarian Crisis
The Lebanese Health Ministry reports that over the past year, Israeli air raids have resulted in at least 2,350 deaths and around 11,000 injuries, displacing more than 1.2 million people. Recent air strikes have particularly devastated northern Lebanon, where 22 individuals, including women and children, lost their lives while seeking shelter from the ongoing attacks. Furthermore, reports indicate that more than a quarter of Lebanon is currently under evacuation orders due to the conflict, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
International Concerns and Warnings
The situation has raised alarms internationally, with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees stressing the dire implications of Israel's military actions. Rima Jamous Emseis pointed out that the continuous evacuation orders reflect a significant humanitarian emergency in Lebanon. As Israel expands its military operations, including ground incursions, the international community is increasingly worried about a potential escalation involving Iran and other regional players.
