Tragic Fire in Caluire-et-Cuire Claims One Life and Leaves Several Injured
A devastating fire broke out in a squatted building in Caluire-et-Cuire, near Lyon, during the night of December 2-3, 2024, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to four others, two of whom are in critical condition. Lyon public prosecutor Thierry Dran confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire, which erupted around 1 a.m. and was brought under control by approximately 140 firefighters by 3:30 a.m.
The building, which had been occupied since October 2023 by around 80 individuals, primarily former residents of the Pyramide squat in Lyon's 7th arrondissement, was known for its dilapidated condition. Eyewitness accounts describe harrowing scenes, with some residents forced to jump from windows to escape the flames. Emergency services reported that nearly 50 occupants received medical attention, with many transported to a Red Cross center for further care.
Concerns Over Building Safety and Legal Controversies
The City of Lyon, which owns the building, has faced criticism from the right-wing opposition in the Lyon Metropolis for allowing the dangerous occupation to continue. They highlighted that a prohibition order issued by the mayor of Caluire-et-Cuire in November 2023, which warned of fire risks due to electrical issues, was annulled by the administrative court of Lyon. This decision has raised questions about the safety protocols in place for such squatted buildings.
Local authorities had previously alerted the Lyon metropolitan area about the building's deteriorating condition, which was constructed using rammed earth, a traditional material in the region. Despite these warnings, the necessary legal measures to address the imminent dangers were reportedly not taken, leading to this tragic incident.
