Guterres Warns of Escalating Tensions Between Israel and Hezbollah
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a stark warning about the escalating hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, expressing deep concern over the potential transformation of Lebanon into "another Gaza." In a recent interview with CNN, Guterres highlighted the urgency of de-escalation amidst rising tensions that have resulted in significant casualties and destruction in Lebanon.
The recent conflict has intensified following bombings that occurred across Lebanon, leading to 37 deaths and over 3,000 injuries. An airstrike on Friday further exacerbated the situation, claiming 45 lives, including that of a prominent Hezbollah military leader, Ibrahim Aqil. Guterres urged both parties to prioritize peace and reduce tensions, recognizing the humanitarian crisis that continues to unfold in the region.
In his statements, Guterres also addressed the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in catastrophic humanitarian consequences since the onset of hostilities on October 7, 2023. The UN chief lamented the apparent lack of willingness from both Israel and Hamas to pursue a ceasefire, describing the current situation as a tragedy that needs urgent attention.
Additionally, Guterres refuted allegations made by Israel against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), stating that claims of UNRWA supporting Hamas are unfounded. He clarified that while Hamas has received support in critical periods, it did not come from UNRWA, but rather from Israel itself. This assertion underscores the complex dynamics at play in the ongoing conflict and the critical role of humanitarian organizations in providing aid to those affected by the violence.
As the UN General Assembly approaches, Guterres's remarks serve as a call to action for the international community to address the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in both Lebanon and Gaza.
