UN Urges Caution for Syrian Refugees Considering Return
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, has emphasized the need for patience among Syrian refugees contemplating their return to Syria following the recent political changes. In a statement made on December 9, 2024, Grandi highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the safety and stability of the country, urging refugees to carefully assess their options. He noted that while there is a significant opportunity for Syria to transition towards peace, the situation remains precarious, with many refugees feeling both eager and hesitant about returning.
Grandi pointed out that the return of millions of Syrian refugees is contingent upon the new leadership's commitment to establishing law and order. He stressed the importance of a transition that respects the rights and aspirations of all Syrians, regardless of their ethnic, religious, or political backgrounds. The UNHCR is prepared to assist in organizing the voluntary return of refugees, but the current climate of uncertainty has led several European nations to suspend the processing of asylum applications from Syrians until further notice.
