Ukrainian Soldiers Resist Russian Onslaught in Kharkiv Region
Ukrainian soldiers are employing drones to drop explosives on Russian positions in a desperate bid to hold the critical city of Lyptsi. CNN reported that the city, essential for Ukraine's efforts to defend Kharkiv, has been under relentless attack, with eight strikes in the hours leading up to their report.
The 13th Khartiia National Guard is steadfastly resisting to prevent Russian forces from positioning artillery within striking range of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city. Oleksandr, a commander, noted that despite their makeshift fortifications, they are combating a highly trained enemy. 'They're not sending just anyone on the raids,' he remarked.
In the outskirts of Kharkiv, Ukrainian troops attempt to contain a persistent Russian assault from multiple angles. According to CNN, these forces face a barrage of drones and artillery, often relying on aging Soviet-era weaponry to defend against better-equipped Russian forces. The 92nd Assault Brigade has even resorted to using captured Russian artillery to fire French mortar shells.
Russia's strategy appears aimed at making Kharkiv uninhabitable. Despite President Putin's claims of not intending to seize the city, experts believe the offensive's primary goal is to undermine civilian life. The attacks have displaced over 14,000 people in the region, according to the World Health Organization.
Kharkiv's defiance continues amidst the chaos. Konstanitn Ananchenko, head of the regional military administration's youth and sports department, emphasized the city's resilience. 'Life goes on,' he told Newsweek, highlighting efforts to keep public amenities running.
However, the prolonged assault takes its toll. Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called for increased international support for Ukraine's air defenses during a visit to the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj has repeatedly requested additional Patriot anti-aircraft systems to protect Kharkiv from ongoing missile and drone strikes.
The Russian campaign has led to significant human toll and property damage. Recent attacks include the tragic double-hit missile strike on a lakeside resort, which killed seven people, including a pregnant woman. Despite such tragedies, many Kharkiv residents stay, embodying a spirit of defiance against the onslaught.
