The Ukraine Peace Summit on June 15-16 in Switzerland aims to unite global powers and the global south despite Russian threats and extensive security measures. Key participants include leaders from Europe and the USA, with India's participation marking a significant diplomatic win.

Crucial Gathering: Ukraine Peace Conference Amid Global Tensions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is tirelessly working to secure the participation of numerous states from the global south at the upcoming Ukraine Peace Conference in Switzerland. The stakes are high as Ukraine navigates the challenges of garnering support from nations like India, Brazil, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and possibly even China, despite their 'pro-Russian neutrality.' Efforts continue as Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha recently urged his Chinese counterpart to engage in the talks. Security expert Kurt Volker pointed out that even a lower-rank Chinese delegate's presence could count as a diplomatic win.

The conference, scheduled for June 15 and 16, has invited over 160 countries, including major global powers. Noteworthy attendees confirmed so far include Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Polish President Andrzej Duda, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Vice President Kamala Harris and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will represent the USA. The summit aims to discuss key elements of Zelensky's 10-point peace plan with the hope to engage around 80 countries, half of which are from outside Europe.

One key participant from the global south, India, has confirmed its attendance, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's commitment to representing the voice of the global south at the summit. However, some countries like Brazil and South Africa have decided not to participate, signaling the diverse geopolitical landscape and the complexities involved in rallying unanimous support.

Swiss Hostility Amidst Global Challenges: Ensuring Security

The Swiss government, led by President Viola Amherd, has declared extensive security measures to safeguard the high-level Ukraine Summit participants. The event will take place in the Bürgenstock Resort, central Switzerland, chosen for its secure and accessible location. Up to 4,000 soldiers could be mobilized for tasks such as guarding critical installations, aerial surveillance, and secure transport of the delegates.

Nidwalden’s cantonal police director, Karin Kayser-Frutschi, highlighted the collaboration with other police forces, the Swiss army, and the Federal Office of Police (fedpol) to manage security. A heliport has been installed for the helicopters assigned for the participants' transport, ensuring a strict security protocol throughout the event.

Protecting Against Cyberthreats and Disruptions

With Russia potentially attempting to destabilize the conference, Swiss authorities are prepared for increased disinformation and cyberattack threats. Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis pointed out that threats have surged recently, indicating efforts to disrupt the conference. Despite these challenges, the measures taken have reportedly controlled all observed attacks.

Local residents in the vicinity of the Bürgenstock Resort will face significant restrictions during the summit. From June 13 to 17, only residents with proper identification will be allowed entry, and various roads and recreational areas will be closed. While some locals have shown frustration over the inconveniences, overall acceptance of the security measures seems to be positive.

  • The Ukraine Peace Conference stands as a critical juncture in navigating the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, aiming to foster dialogue and potential resolutions. The extensive global representation underscores the importance of collective international effort in addressing the ongoing war.
  • India's involvement, as stated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is particularly significant given its historical neutrality. This may pave the way for other hesitant countries from the global south to consider participation.
  • Meanwhile, the Swiss government's robust security planning reflects the seriousness and high stakes of the conference, demonstrating a proactive approach to mitigate potential disruptions and ensure a conducive environment for peaceful discussions.
