Moscow and Kyiv have announced a new exchange of prisoners of war, with each side releasing 95 soldiers. This marks another instance of such exchanges since the onset of the Russian offensive against Ukraine in February 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the release of 95 individuals serving in the army, national guard, and border guards, emphasizing the nation's commitment to bringing back every captive.
The exchange was facilitated by mediation from the United Arab Emirates, similar to previous exchanges. Zelensky shared photos of the released soldiers, who had shaved heads and were wrapped in Ukrainian flags. The Russian Defense Ministry also confirmed the exchange.
On June 5, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that Russia detained 6,465 Ukrainian soldiers, while Ukraine held 1,348 Russian soldiers. However, Kyiv did not corroborate these figures. By June 25, the two countries had already exchanged 90 prisoners each. This recent exchange follows a meeting between negotiators from both sides, marking a significant step in the ongoing conflict.
In addition to the prisoner exchanges, there have been discussions about reuniting families separated by the war. Tatiana Moskalkova, the Russian human rights commissioner, mentioned that a second interview took place regarding family reunification. Discussions included joint humanitarian actions related to this issue.
Ukraine accuses Russia of deporting approximately 20,000 minors, demanding their return. Moscow denies these allegations, asserting that their actions are for the safety of the children. The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Children's Commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova, for the alleged war crime of child deportation. Despite these accusations, Russia has gradually been handing over small groups of minors to Ukraine, with Qatar playing a mediating role.
However, Moscow faces further accusations of giving Ukrainian children for adoption to Russians. Maria Lvova-Belova herself admitted to adopting a teenager from Mariupol, a city devastated by a Russian siege in the early months of the war in 2022.
